Shopify Net Profit Calculation
Automatic calculation of net profit and unit economics for Shopify, including all expenses.
Problem
Shopify store owners spend too much time manually reconciling data to calculate actual net profit and unit economics.
Idea check
The idea is checked against a 14-point checklist: clarity, reusability across customers, sales potential. Every item is filled in with a factual finding, and the final verdict is computed by formula — identically for every idea.
Shopify
How many customers and how much money For business
Where the number comes from:
The ceiling is the lower of two limits: what the market gives up (1% of the segment at a realistic capture rate) and how many customers a crew of this size can actually serve. Ideas with a ceiling below $2000 per month are rejected. The "customers for $10000" counter shows how many paying customers it takes to reach that figure.
The limit here is not the market but capacity: 1 dev, 3-5 months can serve roughly 1000 paying customers — beyond that you need people for support and sales, which is a different project.
Who is needed to build it 1 dev, 3-5 months
There are no roles here that AI cannot take over — one person can carry this project.
The timeline assumes an AI assistant: it covers code, integrations, UI, copy, docs, tests and first-line support, so a designer, a frontend developer and a copywriter do not count as people here. Only what AI cannot replace counts: long-cycle sales, on-call and SLA, licensed expertise, and the physical world — hardware, logistics, suppliers.
Domain knowledge Self-teachable
The rules are published: API spec, regulator requirements, platform docs. You can verify yourself.
Where the rules are written:
What you must know about someone else's business to write the spec at all: which fields, which rules, what counts as an error. Technical difficulty does not count — the reader is the developer.
Clarity 4/4
-
Concrete process high confidence
Google Sheets.
-
Shopify'.
-
Measurable outcome high confidence
-
One-line pitch high confidence
Reusability 4/4
-
Many similar customers medium confidence
-
Config, not custom work high confidence
-
Recurring workflow high confidence
Sales potential 5/6
-
Budget holder exists high confidence
-
Pain already costs money high confidence
-
Buying trigger medium confidence
-
Cheap access to customers high confidence
-
Recurring value high confidence

How it works: the model must walk every checklist item and cite a concrete fact from the evidence, while the verdict and confidence are computed in code under rules identical for every idea.

Been running our store for about a year and a half now, and as order volume has grown, I've realized how much I'm relying on duct-taped Google Sheets just to figure out if we actually made money in a given week. Shopify’s native dashboards give decent high-level top-line numbers, but the moment I try to drill down into actual unit economics, it falls apart: * **True Net Profit / Contribution Margin:** Between blended ad spend, payment processing cuts, shipping label discrepancies, and COGS, native reports make it a nightmare to see real daily/weekly take-home. * **Refund Timing Distortions:** When a return from two weeks ago gets processed today, it dings today’s net numbers instead of reflecting against the original cohort/order date. * **Repeat Purchase / LTV by First Touch:** Trying t…

Most of what you're describing isn't really a reporting tool problem, it's a data model problem. Shopify reports refunds by the date they're processed, so a return from two weeks ago dings today. The fix is to report by order date and attach every refund back to its original order ID. You can't do that in native reports, but it's trivial once the data lives somewhere you control. What I've seen work for stores at your size: pull orders, refunds and line items from the Shopify API daily, pull ad spend from Meta and Google, and land it all in BigQuery or a Postgres database. Keep a COGS table per variant with effective dates (so supplier price changes don't rewrite history), estimate payment fees per gateway, and use actual label costs from your shipping app instead of what the customer pai…
