Stress test
Wedge: We are building a specialized POS system for fabric and equipment retail stores for owners of such stores at the moment they manually create SKUs and enter serial numbers, because now they are forced to face inaccuracies and cumbersome audits.
Drop it if: If store owners prefer to use universal POS systems and adapt them to their needs, or find manual entry acceptable.
Does a plain AI chat solve it: no — needs integration, scheduled runs or third-party data

Idea check
The idea is checked against a 14-point checklist: clarity, reusability across customers, sales potential. Every item is filled in with a factual finding, and the final verdict is computed by formula — identically for every idea.
How many customers and how much money For business
Where the number comes from:
The ceiling is the lower of two limits: what the market gives up (1% of the segment at a realistic capture rate) and how many customers a crew of this size can actually serve. Ideas with a ceiling below $2000 per month are rejected. The "customers for $10000" counter shows how many paying customers it takes to reach that figure.
Who is needed to build it Needs a second person
Besides the developer you need: on-call and SLA
The timeline assumes an AI assistant: it covers code, integrations, UI, copy, docs, tests and first-line support, so a designer, a frontend developer and a copywriter do not count as people here. Only what AI cannot replace counts: long-cycle sales, on-call and SLA, licensed expertise, and the physical world — hardware, logistics, suppliers.
Domain knowledge One-time insider
The rules are nowhere written down in full. One session with a practitioner is enough; after that they are the same for everyone.
Where the rules are written: Rules for inventory and serial number tracking depend on the store, nowhere described. Can only be tested with real data.
What you must know about someone else's business to write the spec at all: which fields, which rules, what counts as an error. Technical difficulty does not count — the reader is the developer.
Clarity 4/4
-
Concrete process high confidence
-
Measurable outcome medium confidence
-
One-line pitch high confidence
Reusability 3/4
-
Many similar customers medium confidence
-
Config, not custom work medium confidence
-
Recurring workflow high confidence
Sales potential 5/6
-
Budget holder exists high confidence
-
Pain already costs money high confidence
-
Buying trigger medium confidence
-
Cheap access to customers high confidence
-
Recurring value high confidence
Red flags
-
Thin evidence medium
-
Already free from incumbent medium
Scores
How it works: the model must walk every checklist item and cite a concrete fact from the evidence, while the verdict and confidence are computed in code under rules identical for every idea.

Fabric SKUs are the real pain here. Most POS systems treat fabric as a variant product, which works until you have 40 blues that arent the same dye lot. RetailEdge can handle that if you force unique SKUs per bolt, but it gets messy fast. For the equipment side, youll want serialized inventory. Thats where RetailEdge shows its age. Its doable, but youre manually entering serial numbers and the audit trail is clunky. If youre selling warranties or service contracts on that gear, double-check whether RetailEdge can tie those to the original sale without workarounds. Multi-location with fabric is rough because your stock is literally moving. A bolt cut in store A for a customer in store B throws off counts unless your transfers are tight. QuickBooks integration exists but its one-way pu…

organize and sync retail inventory with Shopify: thousands of products in POS lack structure, attributes, and descriptions

I'm looking for insights, guidance, and experience from individuals who are running a brick and mortar shop and selling inventory on Shopify. This question is probably more about inventory management for small retail shops than Shopify specifically, but I am interested in Shopify-native solutions/tools. I have a client who uses Lightspeed POS and we are rolling out eCommerce on Shopify. I've used Shopify for years and run a fairly large digital goods shop there already. I'm pretty familiar with Shopify at this point, have 20+ years experience on digital eCommerce, and thousands of projects in web dev over the years - but retail is fairly new to me. Retail/brick and mortar is a different beast. They have tens of thousands of products living in Lightspeed that are barely organized. No str…
